China’s President Xi Jinping will travel to North Korea next week, marking his first visit to Pyongyang in seven years and underscoring the enduring ties between the two neighbours, Chinese state media announced on Friday.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, Xi’s trip will take place from June 8 to 9 at the invitation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “At the invitation of Kim Jong Un… Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the People’s Republic of China, will pay a state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea from June 8 to 9," CCTV reported.

While there is no confirmation, it is expected that North Korea’s nuclear program will likely be a key topic as the confirmation of the visit comes just a day after North Korea unveiled a new facility to produce the ingredients for nuclear bombs.

Beijing remains a crucial source of diplomatic and political support for Pyongyang, one of the world’s most isolated countries and the target of extensive international sanctions. Despite their close relationship, visits by Chinese presidents to North Korea are infrequent.

Xi last visited Pyongyang in 2019, the first trip by a Chinese head of state to North Korea since Hu Jintao’s visit in 2005.

The announcement follows Xi’s high-profile hosting of Kim in Beijing in September, when the North Korean leader, alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, was invited as a guest of honour to a military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan in World War II.

North Korea’s official news agency, KCNA, confirmed Xi’s upcoming visit but did not provide additional details.
