A 35-year-old woman is in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney's east on Saturday morning, ABC reported.Emergency services were called to the beach just before 11 am.
The woman was pulled from the water by members of the public who commenced first aid before the arrival of emergency services.
Police rendered first aid to the woman, who had suffered serious arm and leg injuries, before NSW Ambulance paramedics attended. Police cleared nearby Coogee Oval to facilitate the landing of the CareFlight helicopter to airlift her to hospital.NSW Ambulance Inspector Mike Corlis told reporters at Coogee Beach that the woman "has large flesh wounds to the leg and the arms that are going to require a lot of surgery."Witness Nicola Logan told Reuters she saw a "massive pool of blood" in the water, then "a lady kind of motioning to swim, lots of splashing, and then a ski paddler was out trying to bring her in."ABC journalist Patrick Stack, who was on the beach with his child when the emergency unfolded, described hearing a chilling scream that cut across the water and the rapid activation of the shark alarm.Coogee Beach and others in the city's Randwick Council area were closed for 24 hours following the attack.
Council mayor Dylan Parker told reporters: "We'll be working closely with the New South Wales government, awaiting instruction as to when it is safe to reopen." Nearby beaches, including Clovelly and Bronte, have also been shut.Saturday's attack is the latest in a deeply concerning run of shark incidents along the Australian coast. There have been nine shark attacks reported in Australia since the start of 2026 — with four being fatalities.
A week before the Coogee attack, a man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing off the coast of Western Australia.Earlier this year, Sydney experienced an alarming cluster of incidents in a single weekend. Three separate attacks in just over 26 hours left a 12-year-old boy fighting for his life, a man in his 20s in critical condition, and an 11-year-old boy with only damage to his surfboard to show for a narrow escape.Investigations into Saturday's attack are ongoing. Authorities have not yet confirmed the species of shark involved.
