Sixteen-year-old Sharvari Shende scripted history on Sunday, clinching gold in the Under-18 women’s recurve event at the World Archery Youth Championships 2025 in Winnipeg, Canada. With this achievement, she joined the elite list of Deepika Kumari and Komalika Bari as only the third Indian to be crowned world champion in the category.
Seeded just 20th after qualifying, Sharvari took the tougher road, knocking out some of the biggest names along the way. She stunned top seed Kim Minjeong of Korea 7-3 in the semi-final. In the final, up against another Korean, third seed Kim Yewon, Sharvari held her nerve in a shoot-off after the match ended 5-5—firing a perfect 10 to clinch gold 10-9.
“Am I really the world champion? Oh my God, it was amazing," Shende was quoted as saying by Olympics.com.
“I’m just thinking that I will shoot my best. One arrow will decide if I’m going to be a world champion or not. My coach was telling me to be confident, believe in yourself, you’re going to be the champion."
“I always had a dream to become the world champion, and this is my last year in the cadet, so I feel very proud, I feel I make my India proud," she added.
Earlier in the week, Sharvari Shende also won bronze in the U18 women’s recurve team event. On the final day, Gatha Khadake and Agastay Singh added another bronze in the U18 mixed recurve, beating Chinese Taipei.
With these, India finished the World Archery Youth Championships 2025 in Winnipeg with eight medals—four gold, two silver and two bronze.
India had also dominated the previous edition in Limerick, Ireland, winning six golds, including three individual titles. The 19th edition of the biennial event featured 570 archers from 63 nations. The next championship will be hosted in Antalya, Turkiye, in 2027.
