A new survey from the Carnegie Endowment has emerged, suggesting “four out of every 10 Indian-Americans are contemplating leaving the United States".

The Indian population in the United States is estimated at over 5.2 to 5.4 million as of 2024–2025, representing approximately 1.5 per cent of the total U.S. population. Interestingly, they are the second largest Asian group to be residing in the U.S.

The 2026 report of the Carnegie Endowment has left the world baffled. After all, why do Indians want to leave a country, hailed as a superpower? Let’s dig deeper.

What Happened To ‘American Dream’?

The survey says that the Indian-American community is navigating a period of “turbulence", with approximately 40 per cent of Indians seriously considering leaving the U.S.

Among those contemplating emigration, 58 per cent said the “political climate" is the primary reason.

A full 71% of Indian-Americans express dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s performance  during his second term, which began in January, 2025.

Diminishing Sense Of Belonging

Experts reckon that during the second term, President Trump has conveyed the message that “America is for Americans only", leading to a diminishing sense of belongingness within the Indian community.

On top of that, political analysts suggest polarization has intensified during Trump’s second term in office, with the Indians feeling like outsiders.
