Doctors and aid workers in Gaza report a surge in children left unable to speak due to war injuries and severe trauma, with experts warning of lasting psychological damage

Children across Gaza are not able to speak following war-related injuries or psychological trauma. Several specialists are reporting a rise in number of children who are suffering from this.
According to a report by Aljazeera, some children have also suffered physical challenges following massive bombardments in Gaza. Cases including head injuries, neurological damage or blast trauma among the children has come to light.
The report said that child psychotherapist Katrin Glatz Brubakk, who has worked in Gaza twice with Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, describes it as “silent suffering" often hidden beneath the scale of the destruction.
What Exactly Is The Problem?
Doctors and aid workers say the condition of the children is not caused by physical injury alone, but by extreme shock, fear and repeated exposure to violence. Many children who once spoke normally have suddenly fallen silent after witnessing bombings, losing family members, or being injured in attacks.
In some cases, even very young children are unable to form words or develop speech at all, as constant stress disrupts their mental and cognitive growth. Experts warn that such trauma can delay development and have long-term effects if not treated early.
The crisis is worsened by a severe shortage of mental health and speech therapy services. With hospitals overwhelmed and basic survival taking priority, specialised care for children remains limited.
Aid agencies say nearly all children in Gaza now need psychological support, as the war continues to leave deep and lasting scars.
Experts warn that without urgent intervention, an entire generation risks growing up traumatised — and, for many, unable to find their voice again.
