VIRUDHUNAGAR: Seven workers, including two women, were killed in a blast at a private firecracker unit in Chinnakamanpatti near Sivakasi on Monday. The explosion occurred around 10 am while workers were engaged in routine tasks.
Over four rooms in the unit were completely damaged in the incident.Fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and battled the blaze, which quickly spread across the unit. Five workers — two women and three men — died on the spot, while four others sustained serious injuries. Two of them later succumbed at the Virudhunagar Govt Hospital, taking the death toll to seven.Police registered a case and initiated an investigation. The unit’s foreman was taken into custody for inquiry. Intermittent explosions continued for some time, causing panic among residents in the surrounding area.
