The first solar eclipse of 2026 will occur on Tuesday, February 17. The annual celestial event, also known as Surya Grahan, will see the Moon cover the Sun’s centre, leaving a rim of light around it. This creates the “Ring of Fire".

The path of annularity will cut across East Antarctica.

What is an annular eclipse?

An annular eclipse happens when the Earth, Sun and Moon are aligned and the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth. As per NASA, this takes place when the Moon is at or near its farthest point from Earth. Because it appears smaller, it does not cover the Sun completely, leaving a bright ring.

Date and timings

The eclipse will last about 2 minutes and 20 seconds. It begins at 07:01 UTC, which is 12:31 pm IST.

The annular solar eclipse is occurring on amavasya tithi, the new moon day in the Hindu lunar calendar. The amavasya tithi will start at 5:34 PM today and end at 5:30 PM tomorrow. The snan time in Hindu households observing restrictions will be from 5:16 AM to 6:07 AM.

Where will it be visible?

The path of the eclipse will be limited to a small region in Antarctica. The maximum eclipse will be visible from research stations such as Concordia and Mirny.

Observers in the rest of Antarctica, including cruise ships, will see a partial eclipse. Partial phases will also be visible in southern Africa, including South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and in parts of Argentina and Chile.

Will the eclipse be visible from India?

The solar eclipse on February 17 will not be visible from India. The alignment takes place in the Southern Hemisphere, when the Sun remains below the horizon in India. As a result, people in the country will not be able to witness the event.

How to watch safely

Experts advise using ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses. Indirect viewing methods, such as pinhole projectors, should be used. Telescopes and binoculars must have approved solar filters. Weather conditions should be checked and viewing locations planned in advance.

Significance in India

In India, Surya Grahan is seen as more than an astronomical event. Many Hindu households observe Sutak Kaal, beginning 12 hours before a solar eclipse. Customs include fasting, temple closures and ritual baths after the eclipse. Although the eclipse will not be visible from India, some households may still observe these restrictions.
