Staffer Dies, Several Injured After Fire Breaks Out At Hospital In Delhi's Anand Vihar

A 28-year-old housekeeping staff member died and several others were injured after a fire broke out in the server room of Kosmos Hospital in Anand Vihar, east Delhi, on Saturday afternoon.

The staffer has been identified as Amit, who was among the three hospital employees trapped inside the building when the fire began.

According to officials from the Delhi Fire Service, the fire started around 12.20 pm in the server room on the ground floor of the multi-storey hospital located on Vikas Marg. A PCR call was also received by the police around the same time.

Fire Officer Ashok Kumar Jaiswal said eight fire tenders were sent to the site. “The fire started in the server room on the ground floor. A total of 11 people were rescued, including eight patients. One person died," he told the media.

As a precaution, the hospital quickly evacuated patients, who were shifted to the nearby Pushpanjali Hospital. Three staff members — Amit (housekeeping), and Har Devi and Naresh (dialysis room employees) — were also rushed there.

Doctors declared Amit dead, while the other two staffers and all eight patients are reported to be stable, police confirmed.

A preliminary inquiry revealed that Amit had initially tried to escape the smoke and flames by going to the rooftop, but later, for reasons still unknown, allegedly locked himself inside a bathroom on the third floor.

“We suspect he may have been overcome by smoke inhalation," a police officer said. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case, and the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. A senior officer said a detailed investigation is underway to check for any fire safety lapses at the hospital.
