The month-long Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls got underway across Karnataka on Tuesday, with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar leading by example as he completed his own enumeration form and urged voters to participate in the exercise before the July 29 deadline.

“Regarding the SIR, I have started from my own house," Shivakumar said after receiving the enumeration form from a Booth Level Officer (BLO), adding that the revision exercise had begun from his residence in Bengaluru South and Ramanagara.

The chief minister said voters could either fill out the physical enumeration form or download it online, though he suggested that the paper form would be easier for many households.

“I found it a little difficult to enter all the details. There is an option to download the form and fill it online using a telephone. However, it is better if all of us receive the physical form," he said.

Shivakumar said a single educated member of a family could complete the forms on behalf of relatives living elsewhere, adding that Booth Level Officers, Booth Level Agents and supervisors had already formed WhatsApp groups to assist voters through the process.

Appealing to people to safeguard their voting rights, he urged citizens to return the completed forms before the July 29 deadline. Voters can also update their registered mobile number and submit a fresh photograph if they wish to replace an older one, while Aadhaar details may be provided only for identification purposes.

Responding to concerns over the mobile application, the chief minister said those uncomfortable with the digital process could simply opt for the physical form.

The Election Commission on Tuesday launched the house-to-house Special Intensive Revision exercise across Karnataka to update the state’s electoral rolls. Booth Level Officers will distribute enumeration forms until July 29, following which the draft electoral roll will be published on August 5.

Claims and objections can be filed until September 4, while the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on October 7. Citizens who turn 18 on or before October 1, 2026, will be eligible for inclusion in the revised electoral rolls.
