Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-enabled Public Distribution System (PDS) in Gandhinagar, calling it another step in taking the Digital India initiative into welfare delivery.
Speaking at the launch, Shah said technology developed over the past decade is now being applied to essential services such as food distribution to improve transparency and efficiency.
He said, “Today, as an extension of Digital India, inspired by Narendra Modi, digital systems are reaching even food and supply management. When I use the term Digital India and look back 11 years, it is hard to imagine that nearly 600 million people in this country came from families that did not have even a single bank account. And today, the same India, 11-12 years later, under the leadership of PM Modi, is accounting for half of the world’s digital transactions. This means that if there are two digital transactions anywhere in the world, one takes place in India—one in the rest of the world and one in India. This transformation has occurred within a span of just 11-12 years."
Shah added, “Inspired by Prime Minister Modi’s vision, the expansion of Digital India is today reaching, in a way, the realm of food and supply arrangements… Today, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, half of the world’s digital transactions are taking place in India… This transformation has come in just an interval of 11-12 years, and today that same Digital India is stepping into the field of providing affordable grain to the poor…"
According to him, the new system is intended to make ration distribution more transparent and ensure benefits reach citizens in a smoother and more reliable manner.
