The Strait of Hormuz—the world’s most vital oil artery—has been declared fully open for commercial vessels. The announcement came directly from Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who linked the move to the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

Araghchi took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that while the waters are open, ships must follow the “coordinated route" set by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation. This easing of restrictions is seen as a massive victory for global energy stability during the delicate 10-day truce.

While the reopening was supposed to be a moment of serious international relief, it has turned into a viral comedy of errors, thanks to a slip-up by Donald Trump and a lightning-fast response from Iranian diplomatic missions.

US President Donald Trump was quick to acknowledge the move when it happened: “Iran has just announced that the strait of Iran is fully open and ready for full passage. Thank you."

This was noticed by the Iran Embassy In Zimbabwe, who took a dig at the tweet with this text: “Bad mood= strait of trump

Normal mood= strait of Hormuz

Good mood= strait of Iran"

Despite the linguistic slip-ups, the stakes remain high. Trump has already extended an invitation to Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to meet at the White House. He also sent a direct warning to the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, stating, “I hope Hezbollah acts nicely and well during this important period of time."

Under the terms outlined by US officials, the ceasefire is set to last 10 days, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement if negotiations show progress. Israel retains what the agreement describes as its right to take “necessary measures in self-defence" against imminent or ongoing threats, while Lebanon is expected to prevent attacks by Hezbollah and other armed groups operating within its territory. The deal also places responsibility for internal security on Lebanon’s state security forces and calls for continued US-facilitated talks to address outstanding issues.
