Al Nassr superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was absent for a second game in a row as the Saudi Pro League side registered yet another win over Al Ittihad on Friday.

Ronaldo is unhappy with his club’s inactivity in the transfer market and has been missing from Al Nassr’s games against Al Riyadh and Al Ittihad. Despite the Portuguese forward’s absence, Al Nassr netted through Sadio Mane and Angelo Gabriel to post a 2-0 win over league leaders, to cut the gap down to a single point.

The 41-year-old’s absence from the game further fuels speculation and his future at the club, despite 18 months still remaining on his existing contract agreement.

Ronaldo’s absence against Al Ittihad comes after a stern warning from the League which said a player, however significant, can’t put his interests ahead of the club’s.

“The Saudi Pro League is structured around a simple principle: every club operates independently under the same rules," a Saudi Pro League spokesperson said.

““Clubs have their own boards, their own executives and their own football leadership. Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy sit with those clubs, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance. That framework applies equally across the league."

“Cristiano has been fully engaged with Al-Nassr since his arrival and has played an important role in the club’s growth and ambition," he spokesperson added.

“Like any elite competitor, he wants to win. But no individual – however significant – determines decisions beyond their own club."

“Recent transfer activity demonstrates that independence clearly. One club strengthened in a particular way. Another chose a different approach. Those were club decisions, taken within approved financial parameters," he added.

Al Nassr stand second in the league with 49 points to their name from 20 games, just a solitary point behind leaders Al Ittihad. Al Ahli stand third with 47 points, followed by Al Qadsiah in fourth with 43 points this season.
