Singer and dubbing artist Sunitha Upadrasta responded after her recent comments about feminism led to criticism on social media. The veteran singer shared that her words were taken out of context and that she has always believed in equal rights, dignity and safety for women.

After facing criticism, Sunitha Upadrasta took to her Instagram stories to clarify that she never wanted to defend or support inappropriate behavior towards women. She wrote, “As a woman, I strongly believe in equal rights, equal opportunities, dignity, and respect for women.” She also said that she has zero tolerance for exploitation, injustice or discrimination against women as she added, “I would never support or tolerate anything that harms or demeans another woman.

Her statement began, “A statement in my recent interview was made out of sheer anger and disappointment at the way some lecherous men perceive women, and was never intended to justify, encourage, or normalize disrespect, judgement, exploitation, or any inappropriate behavior towards women.”

She requested people to watch the complete interview instead of judging only short clips shared on social media. “I request that my words be understood in the context in which they were spoken and not be assigned meanings I never intended.

My values remain unchanged: equality, respect, and zero tolerance for exploitation and injustice towards women,” she wrote.

She said that some things are wrongly presented as symbols of women's empowerment.While talking about the slogan "my body, my choice," she said that if women can say "my body, my choice," then men could say "his eyes, his choice." Many social media users criticised the comment. They felt that it made light of women's rights and could encourage unhealthy attitudes.
