Kerala’s controversial case related to women’s entry in Sabarimala temple will be reviewed again by the Supreme Court. The recent petitions submitted at the top court are seeking a review of the Supreme Court’s 2018 verdict allowing women to enter Sabarimala. The court will be reviewing the petitions on Monday.

Six years ago, the Sabarimala temple verdict stirred the entire nation. Kerala witnessed several protests and counter-protests after the top court allowed women to enter Sabarimala. Now, based on the recent development, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant will consider the petitions seeking a review of the landmark 2018 verdict.

As per the reports, the court is also expected to take a decision on the larger nine-judge Constitution bench that briefly took up the case in 2019.

Notably, Chief Justice Surya Kant is the only member of the present Bench who was part of that nine-judge bench. After a brief hearing, the proceedings were deferred amid the outbreak of Covid-19.

What Was The Verdict In 2018?

In 2018, the Supreme Court in a 4:1 majority ruled that the exclusion of women from Sabarimala was unconstitutional. The women of all age groups were allowed entry into the Sabarimala shrine.

Before this verdict, menstruating women were not allowed to visit the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala. Breaking the practices, the temple gates were opened for women on October 17 amid massive protest. Several women, including journalists, devotees, and activists who attempted to enter the shrine, were forced to return by protestors.

In consequence, the National Association of Ayyappa Devotees, the Nair Service Society, and 17 other organisations moved review petitions seeking recall of the September 28 verdict.
