Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan on Sunday (May 17, 2026) urged the Tamil Nadu government to suspend the collection of payments over agricultural loans from farmers until the loans are waived. His statement follows representation from farmer associations calling for suspension of collection of payments over agricultural loans until they are waived.
“When announcing loan waivers, the government usually suspends the collection of payment over loans till it verifies the eligibility and documents of beneficiaries. The deadline for farmers to pay back loans without interest is about to end. After the deadline, they will be forced to make the payment with an interest of 13%,” Mr. Vasan pointed out.
Such a scenario would affect the farmers from availing loans for cultivation, Mr. Vasan contended and further said that the Tamil Nadu government should extend a lending hand to farmers. “Farmers have appealed for waiving loans without any conditions. So, the Tamil Nadu government should waive loans without conditions.”
