The uncertainty over the Nizamabad Mayor’s post has come to an end, with the Congress set to assume control of the municipal corporation with the backing of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).
The development comes despite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as a strong force in the corporation, prompting the party to announce that it will sit in the opposition.
Addressing a media conference, BJP MP Dharmapuri Arvind thanked voters for supporting the party and highlighted its electoral performance.
“Thanks to the people of Nizamabad who voted for the BJP. The BJP has won 28 seats. In Nizamabad Corporation, we will remain in the opposition," he said.
Arvind added that the BJP would continue to work for development despite not being in power.
“We will transform Nizamabad district into Indore," he said, adding that the party would play a constructive role going forward.
Issuing a warning against political defections, he said, “Anyone who switches parties should resign from their positions and leave."
He also congratulated BJP leader Bandi Sanjay during the interaction with the media.
According to news agency PTI, the Congress recorded a strong performance in Telangana’s municipal elections, providing a boost to the Revanth Reddy-led government.
Of the 2,582 wards across 116 municipalities that went to the polls on February 11, the Congress won over 1,300 wards, followed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) with about 700 and the BJP with around 275 wards.
The report mentioned that in the seven municipal corporations where elections were held, the Congress won three and was leading in one, while the BJP secured a majority of seats in Karimnagar and Nizamabad.
However, several urban local bodies returned hung verdicts, leading political parties to seek support from independents and smaller groups to form administrations.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said the Congress had decisively won 83 municipalities and five corporations, describing the outcome as a matter of satisfaction after nearly two decades.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy termed the results a “resounding win" and said the verdict reflected public approval of governance and welfare initiatives undertaken by the state government.
BJP ALLEGES ALLIANCE POLITICS IN KARIMNAGAR
Meanwhile, the BJP alleged that the Congress, BRS and AIMIM have joined hands in Karimnagar to capture the Mayor’s post and prevent the party from forming the administration.
BJP leaders claimed the three parties were working together with the sole objective of keeping the BJP out of power.
According to BJP sources, the alliance has reportedly offered the Mayor’s post to an Independent corporator as part of its strategy.
The party alleged that Congress leaders met the corporator late at night, while BRS leaders also held closed-door discussions.
BJP leaders further claimed outreach efforts were made to Independents, members of the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB), and even BJP corporators.
The BJP also alleged that the corporator concerned has begun contacting Independents and BJP members through aides and phone calls, and claimed that financial assistance was offered in exchange for support.
The party said it is closely monitoring the developments and taking the matter seriously.
AIMIM’S ROLE IN POST-POLL EQUATIONS
PTI reported that the AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, demonstrated influence in urban local bodies by winning 22 wards in four municipal corporations and over 40 wards across 15 municipalities.
With closely contested numbers in several corporations, AIMIM’s support has emerged as crucial in government formation.
