Tamil Nadu CM Stalin pushes for state autonomy, slams Centre over funds

Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Wednesday tabled a report in the Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking greater state autonomy and calling for amendments to the Constitution, asserting that states continue to struggle for funds and powers within India’s federal framework.

The report was prepared by a committee led by former Supreme Court judge Kurian Joseph and submitted to the Chief Minister on February 16. Stalin described the move as “historic”, saying it was an attempt to reshape Centre–state relations and strengthen federalism.

Addressing the Assembly, Stalin said autonomy for states and a coalition government at the Union level were necessary for balanced development. He argued that the demand was not political but aimed at safeguarding the growth and livelihood of people across India. He also noted that the Constitution has been amended more than 100 times since Independence and could be amended again to empower states.

The Chief Minister accused the Union government of not adequately respecting states and said they were still “fighting for funds,” reinforcing his party’s long-standing demand for greater fiscal and administrative decentralisation.

The proposal drew support from the Congress. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai said the party welcomed and supported the Chief Minister’s move and would place the issue before the All India Congress Committee for further discussion.

He added that the Congress supports greater autonomy for states and would take a decision on backing any constitutional amendment after consultations at the national level.
