As the cop reached the spot, the father was injured in an attack allegedly by his sons. They attacked the police officer and hacked him to death.

A police officer was killed in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district after he intervened in a violent altercation between a father and his two sons, according to officials.

The incident took place on late Monday night near Udumalpet, when Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) of police, Shanmugavel, responded to a distress call to emergency services about a fight between the father Murthy and sons – Thangapandian and Manikandan – who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at an estate in Kudimangalam, which was owned by a local AIADMK MLA, NDTV reported.

The two sons had attacked their father. As the police officer reached the spot, he intervened between them and attempted to make an arrangement of ambulance for the injured father.

However, while he was speaking with the elder son Thangapandian, the younger son Manikandan, who was in hiding, allegedly attacked Shanmugavel with a sickle, the outlet reported.

After this, the injured father and the elder son joined the attack and chased him, and allegedly hacked him to death.

The officer’s driver escaped the crime scene and informed the cops about the crime.

The cops formed multiple teams to nab the accused after they were reported to have absconded since the incident.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced financial assistance of Rs 1 crore for the police official’s family.
