Tamil Nadu has scripted history with an almost 85 per cent voter turnout, the highest ever for the state, in the Assembly Elections 2026. As voting took place on Thursday, April 23, voters came out in huge numbers to cast their vote. Women voters, especially, have cast their vote in large numbers. The election saw an 85.76 per cent women voter turnout.

Tamil Nadu’s women voter base has largely been a mainstay for the AIADMK — given the face of its late leader J. Jayalalitha. Since her demise, the DMK has been trying to venture into the untapped women voter base by introducing welfare schemes, such as the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam (KMUT), which provides Rs. 1,000 per month to beneficiaries, and the free bus ride for women.

Both parties, stemming from the same ideological base, dominate the political landscape of Tamil Nadu.

Largely, the power in Tamil Nadu has alternated between the DMK and the AIADMK.

However, a new player in the fray this election is actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK, who has added a new dimension to the contest.
