Tamil Nadu CM Vijay orders closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops near temples, schools and bus stands within two weeks, citing public welfare and safety concerns

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops operating near temples, educational institutions and bus stands across the state, citing public welfare and safety concerns.

According to an official press release, the decision was taken after a statewide review ordered by the Chief Minister to identify TASMAC outlets functioning within a 500-metre radius of places of worship, schools, colleges and bus stands.

At present, TASMAC operates 4,765 liquor retail outlets across Tamil Nadu. The review found that 717 shops were located within the restricted zones, including 276 shops near places of worship, 186 near educational institutions and 255 near bus stands.

The Chief Minister has directed authorities to shut down all identified outlets within the next two weeks.

Officials said the decision was aimed at tightening regulations on liquor outlets and addressing public concerns over TASMAC shops operating close to sensitive public spaces.

Vijay, his cabinet colleagues and several senior political leaders were sworn in as Members of the Legislative Assembly at Chennai Secretariat on Sunday.
