1. TVK invites VCK, IUML to be part of Cabinet; Thirumavalavan to decide
The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) extended an open invitation to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to be part of the Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay-led Cabinet.
Minister for Public Works and Sports Development and TVK general secretary (election campaign management) Aadhav Arjuna, while speaking to journalists in Chennai, said Mr. Vijay would decide on the Cabinet expansion and an announcement in this regard was expected soon.
Hours later, Mr. Thirumavalavan, while speaking to mediapersons in Chennai, said he would take a decision on joining Vijay’s Cabinet soon, after holding discussions with the party’s high-level committee.
2. Class 10 Board exam results: State records 94.3% pass rate
Tamil Nadu recorded a pass rate of 94.3% in the Class 10 State board examinations, according to the results announced by School Education Minister Rajmohan in Chennai. This year’s pass percentage surpassed the previous year’s 93.8%.
While Pudukottai topped the State with a pass percentage of 97.57%, Sivaganga came second with 97.54%, followed by Thanjavur at 97.41%.
3. State govt. orders immediate release of ‘Savukku’ Shankar
The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the immediate release of YouTuber A. Shankar alias ‘Savukku’ Shankar from detention.
In an order issued on Tuesday (May 19, 2026), the government said that Mr. Shankar must be released forthwith “as there is no sufficient cause unless he has been detained under any other law or is serving any sentence having been convicted by any court.”
4. Madras HC summons former Chennai Police Commissioner Arun
The Madras High Court expressed shock over a preventive detention order issued by former Greater Chennai Commissioner of Police A. Arun under the Goondas Act and summoned him to the court on May 27 to offer his explanation.
A summer vacation Bench of Justices G.R. Swaminathan and V. Lakshminarayanan said, the preventive detention order issued against real estate developer Santhosh Sharma, facing a criminal case at the instance of DMDK Rajya Sabha member L.K. Sudhish’s wife S. Poornajothi, “shocks our conscience.”
5. HC dismisses plea against State’s decision to close liquor shops
The Madras High Court dismissed a writ petition filed by two individuals challenging a decision taken by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to shut down 717 Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) retail liquor shops located within a distance of 500 metres from educational institutions, places of worship and bus stops.
Justice G.R. Swaminathan observed that it was a “good decision” and refused to interfere with it at the instance of two landlords who had given their properties on lease for running two of those shops.
