A bird got trapped in a deadly kite string between high branches, its leg tightly bound, leaving it hanging helpless and unable to fly.

What began as a distressing sight on Monday in Tehsil Sadar turned into an emotional moment of relief on Tuesday when a bird, trapped for nearly 24 hours in a kite string high atop a tree, was finally rescued by a brave municipal worker who climbed the tree without any safety equipment.

The bird had become entangled in a thin but deadly kite string that was lodged between the upper branches of a tall tree. Its leg was tightly wrapped in the thread, leaving it suspended and unable to fly. People said the bird flapped its wings desperately, trying to break free, but every attempt only tightened the string further around its fragile limb.

For hours, the bird struggled against the invisible trap. It twisted and fluttered, at times hanging upside down, at times clinging to a branch for support. The more it moved, the deeper the string cut into its leg. As evening approached, its movements grew weaker. By nightfall, the exhausted creature remained stuck, occasionally fluttering in pain, its life seemingly hanging by a thread.

“It was painful to watch," said Rajesh Verma, a local resident. “Since yesterday, it kept trying to free itself. Every time it flapped its wings, the string pulled it back. We feared it would not survive the night."

On Tuesday morning, residents alerted the Nagar Palika Parishad, Lakhimpur. When the municipal team arrived, they assessed the situation but found themselves without specialized rescue tools. There was no crane, no ladder tall enough, and no safety harness or rope readily available.

At that moment, one municipal employee stepped forward.

Without waiting for additional equipment, and with no rope or protective gear, the worker began climbing the tall tree using only his hands and feet, gripping rough bark and carefully balancing on narrow branches. The height posed a real danger; one slip could have resulted in serious injury. Onlookers watched in tense silence as he steadily made his way upward.

Reaching the upper branches was only half the challenge. The bird, frightened and weak, fluttered as he approached. The rescuer had to carefully secure his footing while gently untangling the tightly wound string from the bird’s leg. With patience and steady hands, he loosened the thread bit by bit, ensuring he did not injure the already wounded limb.

After several anxious minutes, the bird finally came free.

The man carefully brought the bird down and released it. For a brief second, the bird rested on a lower branch before spreading its wings and flying into the open sky, drawing loud applause from the gathered crowd.

“It takes courage to risk your life like that for a small bird," said Sunita Mishra, who witnessed the rescue. “There was no rope, nothing. He just climbed up and saved it. We all felt proud."

A municipal official later appealed to residents to avoid using harmful kite strings that often remain tangled in trees and pose deadly threats to birds.
