The delayed response to complaints of sexual harassment and alleged religious conversion at Tata Consultancy Services’ Nashik facility reflects a broader systemic failure in enforcing Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) policies, according to Industry experts.
While the company confirmed the suspension of employees allegedly involved in a sexual harassment case at its Nashik office, it reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards harassment.
According to Moneycontrol, former chief financial officer and HR head of Infosys and chairman of Aarin Capital Partners, TV Mohandas Pai, reacted to the oversight at the senior level in TCS and said, “When a man grabs a woman in public and tries to assault her, people around should protest and support the woman."
“But clearly, everyone is living in an atmosphere of fear. There is a failure of systems and processes — absolutely," he said, adding, “There appears to be pandering to religious fanatics. There is open, aggressive behaviour from such groups. This has happened in other companies too — I’ve personally seen instances where people gang up together."
Pai stated that better communication channels are needed for employees to directly connect with managers two levels above them. He suggested that employees should have regular “skip meetings" with a manager two levels above, without their immediate manager present.
Pai called the case a complete “failure" in implementing the POSH policy and said that any complaint must go to a high-level, independent channel, such as a dedicated webpage, not to a direct manager.
TCS Nashik Sexual Harassment Case
The controversy escalated earlier this week after the Nashik police formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the complaints filed female employees, who have accused senior colleagues of sexual harassment and forced religious conversion.
The complainants alleged that they were subjected to mental and sexual harassment by senior staff members and that the company’s human resources department ignored their grievances.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the police have arrested seven people, including the company’s female HR manager.
TCS, while confirming the suspension of the accused employees, maintained that it has long enforced a strict policy against any form of harassment or coercion in the workplace.
