A training programme on “Teak Wood Utilisation and Wood Designing”, jointly organised by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) and the College of Forestry, Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), was held here recently. The training was organised as part of the KFRI’s project ‘Promoting Sustainable Teakwood Use in Domestic Markets of India’, funded by the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO).
The valedictory function, held at the KFRI campus, was presided over by Dr. V. Jamaludheen, Dean, College of Forestry. Dr. Kannan C.S. Warrier, Director, KFRI, delivered the keynote address and highlighted the importance of skill-development programmes that connect research, industry, and traditional craftsmanship, and expressed confidence that the training would foster innovation, value addition, and sustainable growth in Kerala’s wood-based sector. Dr. Sandeep S., Programme Coordinator and Senior Principal Scientist, KFRI, gave the valedictory address.
The programme attracted enthusiastic participation from a diverse group of stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, woodworkers, artisans, researchers, students, and forestry professionals. The sessions covered teak wood processing, quality assessment, value-added product development, carpentry tools, CNC-based manufacturing, and innovative wood design.
Experts from KAU, KFRI, and the wood industry led both theoretical and hands-on training sessions, providing participants with practical exposure to modern wood processing technologies and product development techniques. Organisers noted the overwhelming response and active engagement of participants throughout the programme, highlighting the growing interest in sustainable teak wood utilisation and value-added wood-based enterprises in Kerala. The programme aimed to strengthen technical skills and promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the wood sector.
