The Indian Railways continues to expand its services to cater to the diverse needs of passengers, including the introduction of private train operations.
In 2019, the national transporter launched India’s first private train, and currently, two such services are active, both fully managed and maintained by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
India’s First Private Train Routes
The country’s first private train, the Tejas Express, runs on the busy New Delhi–Lucknow corridor. Its success led to the launch of a second premium Tejas Express in 2020, connecting Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
Tejas Express: Ridership And Earnings
The New Delhi–Lucknow Tejas Express generated operational earnings of around Rs 7.73 lakh within its first month of service. In the third quarter (October–December) of FY 2025–26, both Tejas Express trains collectively earned approximately Rs 50 crore, according to a report in The Indian Express.
Passenger occupancy varied across routes during this period, with the Delhi–Lucknow–Delhi service operating at 69% capacity, while the Ahmedabad–Mumbai–Ahmedabad route exceeded expectations at 109% occupancy.
About Tejas Express Trains
Tejas Express is a semi-high-speed train designed for passenger comfort and modern amenities. Its coaches are produced at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala. While the coaches are technically capable of reaching speeds up to 200 km/h, operational limitations of the tracks currently allow a maximum speed of 160 km/h.
The enhanced speed capability was achieved through advanced features, including steel brake discs, sintered pads, and an electro-pneumatic assist brake system, according to a 2017 statement by the Ministry of Railways.
These trains showcase Indian Railways’ push toward modern, fast, and comfortable rail travel while maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.
