The Telangana government permitted Muslim employees working in government offices to leave work an hour early during the month of Ramzan to offer prayers.

Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao issued an official memorandum allowing Muslim government employees, including teachers, contract and outsourcing staff, employees of boards and corporations, and those working in public sector undertakings, to leave their offices or schools at 4 pm during the fasting period.

The relaxation will be in effect from February 19 to March 20, except in cases where employees are required to remain on duty due to service exigencies.

In a related move, the state’s Director of School Education has approved revised school timings for Ramzan.

From February 19 to March 20, all Urdu-medium government and aided schools, Urdu-medium sections in parallel-medium schools, and DIET colleges will function from 8 am to 1.30 pm.

To compensate for the reduced instructional hours, upper primary and secondary schools will be required to operate for one additional working day, while primary schools will extend their daily schedule by 30 minutes on two working days.

Regional and district education officers have been directed to ensure strict implementation of the revised timings and compensatory arrangements, in line with established practices.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government has also issued similar orders allowing Muslim employees in government offices and educational institutions to leave work an hour early during Ramzan.

Minister for Minority Welfare NMD Farooq said the concession in Andhra Pradesh will be applicable from February 18 to March 19.

Officials said the measure is intended to facilitate the observance of religious practices during the fasting month, and departments have been instructed to ensure uniform implementation, barring emergency situations.
