Polling for the Telangana municipal elections is progressing steadily, with a voter turnout of 28.48 per cent recorded across the state till 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Election officials said polling is continuing smoothly at all designated stations under tight security.
The next official update on turnout is expected at 1:00 p.m. Authorities have urged voters to participate actively in the process.
The elections are being held across about 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations in a three-way contest between the ruling Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
According to the Telangana State Election Commission, 52.17 lakh voters are eligible to vote, including 25.50 lakh men and 26.67 lakh women.
The Commission said 10,719 candidates are contesting across 2,569 wards in the 116 municipalities, while 2,225 candidates are in the fray for 412 wards in the seven municipal corporations.
More than 41,000 polling personnel have been deployed across the state, and around 16,382 ballot boxes are being used.
The elections come at an important time in the state’s political journey. The Congress, after strong gains in the December 2025 gram panchayat polls, is seeking to strengthen its position. The BJP aims to emerge as a strong alternative, while the BRS is looking to recover ground after setbacks in the 2023 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy earlier highlighted welfare schemes introduced since 2023, including fine variety rice through the public distribution system, expansion of the Arogya Sri scheme, free bus travel for women and LPG cylinders at Rs 500 for eligible families. He also spoke about plans to prepare development master plans for municipalities.
Observers noted intense campaigning by all three parties ahead of polling. The results will be declared on February 13.
