Minister for Minorities Welfare Mohammed Azharuddin welcomed the Waqf Tribunal’s directions of extending the UMEED portal deadline by three months and urged the public to ensure compliance.
Addressing the media, Mr. Azharuddin maintained that all efforts were made to ensure as many waqf properties are registered on the portal, even as he urged mutawallis to make the most of the extension, and ensure that they register institutions they are in charge of.
He said that the portal was beset with technical issues, and, initially mutawallis were not equipped with the knowhow as to how to proceed with registration and uploading documents to the portal. He added that while registration is the first step, the checking data and documents, and giving the final approval is a time-taking process.
Documents connected to waqf properties were not in one place, and had to be gathered from different sources, including the State Archives, which was not an easy task.
Advisor to the Telangana Government for Minorities Welfare Mohammed Ali Shabbir said while nearly 75% of waqf institutions were registered, several in villages such as masjids and ashoorkhanas in villages are yet to be registered. This, he said, was on account of several factors such legal tangles, and mutawallis or managing committees having apprehensions about the process, and the government trying to acquire the said properties.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, initially opposing the UMEED portal, and remaining apprehensive about it, and the case being heard in the Supreme Court had added to the delay, he opined.
Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society Chairman Mohammed Faheem Qureshi urged the public to make use of these three months and register as many properties as possible.
Syed Ghulam Afzal Biyabani, Telangana State Haj Committee Chairman, who is also an office bearer of a collective of Mutawallis, caution caretakers to be fastidious while identifying and uploading documents. Inadvertently entering incorrect details could lead to registration being rejected, he said.
As on date, 46,480 registrations were done. Another 16,000 registrations will be completed in the coming weeks.
Taking questions from the media on the recent case of food poisoning in TGMREIS Musheerabad Girls School, B Shafiullah, Secretary, Minorities Welfare, characterised the incident as ‘minor’, and clarified that students were discharged from the hospital. He said that in the recent past there has been an enhancement of 40% in diet charges. No case of food poisoning was reported in the past six months and round-the-clock monitoring of the situation was under way.
In addressing the issue, Mr. Azharuddin recommended that the kitchen staff partake of the food 30 minutes prior to the students.
