The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued an advisory, warning the public about a rise in IPL ticket scams targeting cricket fans through social media platforms, fake websites, Telegram and WhatsApp groups and unauthorised agents.
According to TGCSB, cybercriminals are luring victims with fake VIP and VVIP passes, heavy discounts and last-minute ticket offers for IPL matches. In several cases, fraudsters collect money through UPI, QR codes or bank transfers and either send fake tickets or disappear altogether after receiving payment.
It stated that District App is the only official ticketing partner for IPL ticket bookings.
Officials identified several common red flags, including heavy discounts on sold-out matches, pressure tactics claiming only a few tickets are left, use of personal UPI IDs instead of official payment gateways, fake booking confirmations, edited payment receipts and newly created social media pages with less followers.
Citizens were advised to verify website URLs before making payments, avoid purchasing tickets from unknown agents or social media sellers and never share OTPs, banking credentials or screenshots.
TGCSB has asked victims and the general public to report suspicious cases by dialling cybercrime helpline 1930 or register complaints at the national cybercrime portal.
