Mumbai Metro Line 5: Phase 1 — the stretch from Thane to Dhamankar Naka — is the closest to being ready.

If you live in Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli, or Ulhasnagar, there is a metro line being built specifically for you — and it just got significantly larger. Here is everything you need to know about Metro Line 5, what it means for your daily commute, and when you can actually use it.

What Just Happened?

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) announced on Thursday that Metro Line 5 will now stretch 34.21 km — making it one of the largest metro corridors in the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This follows the approval of a new extension called Metro Line 5A, which adds another 11.83 km to the original 22.38 km project, according to Mid-day.

The total bill? Rs 18,130 crore.

Where Exactly Will It Run?

The full corridor will connect Thane to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, passing through Bhiwandi — one of Asia’s largest textile and warehousing hubs. Think of it as a spine running through the eastern belt of MMR, linking areas that have long been underserved by fast public transport.

When Can Thane Residents Actually Use It?

Phase 1 — the stretch from Thane to Dhamankar Naka — is the closest to being ready. MMRDA says it is now preparing for the CMRS inspection, which is the government safety check that every metro line must clear before it can carry passengers. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said Phase 1 will open for the public by the end of 2026, as reported by Mid-day.

The remaining phases do not yet have confirmed opening dates.

What’s In It For Daily Commuters?

Quite a lot, actually.

What The Leaders Are Saying

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called Metro Line 5 a “critical intervention" for Bhiwandi and the Kalyan-Dombivli belt, noting that the Kalyan-Dombivli region alone has a population of over 35 lakh people who need fast, high-capacity connectivity.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is also MMRDA Chairman, described the corridor as a “powerful mobility link" that will serve lakhs of workers, traders, and citizens across the eastern corridor.

MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee said the project would be central to the authority’s ‘Mumbai in Minutes’ initiative — an ambitious plan to dramatically cut travel time across the region.

The Big Picture

For decades, the eastern belt of MMR — Bhiwandi with its massive warehousing industry, Kalyan-Dombivli with its dense residential population — has grown rapidly but without transport infrastructure to match. Residents have relied on congested highways and an already stretched suburban rail network.

Metro Line 5, when fully operational, changes that equation. At 34.21 km and Rs 18,130 crore, it is one of MMR’s most significant infrastructure bets — and for Thane residents, it is the most direct investment in their daily mobility in a generation.
