Historic Ties And Shared Influence
Donald Trump used the banquet speech to highlight centuries of cultural and economic connections between the two countries, weaving together references from early American trade to modern-day popular culture. He pointed to US merchant Samuel Shaw’s trade with China 250 years ago, referenced Benjamin Franklin citing Confucius in his newspaper and praised President Theodore Roosevelt for helping establish Xi Jinping’s alma mater. Trump also spotlighted the cultural exchange between the two nations in more contemporary terms.

Trump Says US And China Have “Much In Common"
Throughout the speech, Donald Trump struck a notably conciliatory tone, arguing that the United States and China share common national values. The two countries, he said, are connected by ideals of “hard work," “courage" and “achievement."
“The world is a special world with the two of us united and together," Trump said, framing cooperation between Washington and Beijing as essential for global stability.
His remarks echoed earlier comments from Xi Jinping, who told the banquet that the US and China “stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation," while warning both sides must “never mess it up."
