Bengaluru Metro commuters who rely on bicycles for their daily travel are set to get some relief soon. In a move aimed at improving last mile connectivity and encouraging sustainable transport, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced plans to introduce free bicycle parking facilities at 9 selected metro stations across the city.

At present, most Namma Metro stations charge Rs 1 per hour for bicycle parking, with a maximum cap of Rs 10 per day. Under the new plan, these charges will be completely waived at select high footfall stations, making it easier and more affordable for commuters to combine cycling with metro travel.

Why BMRCL Is Introducing Free Bicycle Parking

Officials said the decision was taken after observing growing bicycle usage among metro passengers, especially in residential, industrial and IT corridors. By offering free and secure parking, BMRCL hopes to encourage more people to use bicycles instead of private vehicles for short-distance travel to and from metro stations.

The move is also expected to help reduce traffic congestion around metro stations and support Bengaluru’s push towards greener mobility options.

Tender Process and Implementation Plan

BMRCL has already floated tenders to implement the free bicycle parking system at the selected stations. Interested agencies can submit their bids until February 9, 2026. The agency that wins the tender will be responsible for setting up spacious bicycle stands, maintaining the facility, and ensuring the safety of parked bicycles.

The free parking facility will initially be introduced as a pilot project. Officials indicated that if the response is positive and the system works smoothly, similar facilities could be extended to more metro stations in the future.

Metro Stations Selected for Free Bicycle Parking

The nine stations have been chosen based on passenger density and their proximity to key residential and employment hubs.

While these stations will offer free bicycle parking, the existing paid parking system will continue at all other metro stations.

Safety and Security Measures

To address commuter concerns about theft and safety, BMRCL has mandated several security features at the bicycle parking areas. These include installation of CCTV cameras, adequate lighting, and organised parking layouts to prevent congestion and damage to bicycles.

Officials said the selected agency will be held accountable for maintaining security standards and ensuring that the facility remains accessible and well managed throughout the day.

Pushing Sustainable Travel in the City

With traffic congestion and pollution continuing to be major concerns in Bengaluru, transport planners believe that encouraging cycling alongside public transport is a practical solution. By reducing the cost barrier for bicycle users, BMRCL aims to make metro travel more inclusive and environmentally friendly.

For regular commuters, the initiative could mean lower travel costs, shorter commute times, and a smoother last mile experience — all while contributing to a cleaner city.
