US President Donald Trump said that he believes Iran’s supreme leader has approved a proposed agreement that would see Tehran abandon efforts to obtain a nuclear weapon, offering his strongest indication yet that negotiations could be nearing a conclusion.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said he understood that Iran’s new supreme leader had signed off on the framework being negotiated between Washington and Tehran.
“I understand the answer is yes," Trump said when asked whether the supreme leader had approved the agreement. The remarks came as Trump continued to portray a deal as imminent, following earlier claims that planned US strikes against Iran had been cancelled because negotiations had reached an advanced stage.
What Did Trump Say Iran Has Agreed To?
Trump said Iran had agreed “conceptually" to a framework under which the United States would secure nuclear materials and Tehran would permanently abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons. The US President described the emerging accord as “a very strong memorandum of understanding," while acknowledging that parts of the arrangement remained conceptual rather than fully finalized.
Still, Trump insisted that Iran had made a clear commitment on the issue at the heart of the negotiations. He said, “They will not have a nuclear weapon, they’ve agreed to that. They will not only not have, they will not purchase, develop in any way, any shape, in any way, shape or form a nuclear weapon."
The comments represent the clearest public description yet from Trump of what he says is contained in the proposed agreement.
What Would Happen To The Naval Blockade?
Trump said the United States would immediately end its naval blockade of Iranian ports once the agreement is formally signed. The blockade, which was introduced in April, has been one of Washington’s primary sources of pressure on Tehran during the negotiations.
Is Iran Deal Finalized?
Not yet. Although Trump has repeatedly suggested that negotiations are nearing completion, he acknowledged that the current arrangement remains, at least in part, conceptual. He described the document as a memorandum of understanding rather than a finalized treaty and did not provide details about verification mechanisms, sanctions relief, nuclear inspections or other provisions that would likely be central to any agreement.
Iran has also not publicly confirmed Trump’s characterization of the talks or his assertion that the supreme leader has approved the framework.
