Iran sought to cool expectations of an imminent agreement with the United States, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei saying that negotiations remain unresolved despite repeated claims from US President Donald Trump that a breakthrough is close.

Speaking by phone on Iranian state television, Esmail Baghaei described reports of a completed agreement as speculative and stressed that Tehran has not yet reached a final decision on any proposed deal.

“Iran has not yet reached a final conclusion regarding an agreement," he said.

The remarks represent the clearest public pushback yet against Trump’s increasingly optimistic portrayal of the negotiations, which the US president has repeatedly suggested are nearing completion.

Earlier, Trump said documents related to a “great settlement" were in near-final form, claimed Iran had agreed in principle to abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons and suggested a signing ceremony could take place within days.

What Did Iran Say About Talks?

Esmail Baghaei acknowledged that negotiators have made significant progress but indicated that major disagreements remain. According to the Iranian spokesperson, most of the draft agreement has already been completed. However, he accused Washington of complicating negotiations by introducing new demands late in the process.

“The majority of the text" has already been finalised, he said, but the United States is making “excessive demands" and adding “new requests." His comments suggest that while talks may be advanced, key issues continue to prevent a final agreement from being reached.

Esmail Baghaei also rejected suggestions that Tehran has softened its position because of military or economic pressure from the United States. Trump has repeatedly argued that recent US military action and the naval blockade targeting Iranian ports have forced Tehran back to the negotiating table and increased its willingness to compromise.

The Iranian spokesperson disputed that characterization as he said Tehran had no intention of “giving way under pressure" and insisted that negotiators would not cross the country’s “red lines."

Who Is Mediating Between Iran And US?

Esmail Baghaei confirmed that regional actors continue to play an important role in the negotiations. He said Qatar has been acting as a mediator between Iran and the United States and also referenced Pakistan’s involvement in facilitating contacts. Trump has previously credited several regional governments with helping advance discussions, including Gulf states and other countries in the region.

What Did Iran Say About Strait Of Hormuz?

Esmail Baghaei also criticized the United States over the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes. He blamed Washington for recent tensions in the waterway and argued that US actions had made the strait less secure.
