Narendra Modi in Seychelles urges climate justice for Global South and island states, expands India Seychelles green and strategic ties, receives Guardian of the Blue Horizon honor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for greater climate justice, saying countries that have contributed the least to global warming should not be forced to bear its heaviest consequences.

Addressing the National Assembly of Seychelles during his three-day state visit, Modi said climate action must be guided by fairness, responsibility and equity, particularly for vulnerable island nations facing the brunt of rising sea levels and extreme weather.

Calls For Climate Justice

Modi said the Global South, especially Small Island Developing States, faces disproportionate climate risks despite making only a minimal contribution to global emissions.

He stressed that developing nations require greater access to climate finance, technology and resources to tackle environmental challenges while pursuing sustainable growth.

India-Seychelles To Expand Green Cooperation

Highlighting India’s partnership with Seychelles, Modi said the two countries would deepen cooperation in renewable energy, environmental protection, climate resilience, sustainable development, marine science and coastal management.

He also called for stronger collaboration among countries of the Global South to address shared environmental challenges and build resilient economies.

Receives Seychelles’ Highest Honour

Earlier in the day, Modi was conferred the inaugural Guardian of the Blue Horizon, Seychelles’ highest distinction for leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Accepting the award, he dedicated the honour to all nations committed to protecting the environment and combating climate change, saying it reflected the shared vision of India and Seychelles for a sustainable future.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came as India and Seychelles signed 19 agreements covering defence, digital payments, healthcare, the Blue Economy, maritime security and space cooperation, further strengthening their strategic partnership in the Indian Ocean.
