US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday warned against imposing tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, calling such actions “unacceptable" and a threat to global trade and energy security.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio said: “Tolling system in Strait of Hormuz is unacceptable; it is a threat to the world and completely illegal."
The remarks come amid rising tensions around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz following conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, with nearly 20% of global oil supplies transported through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.
Concerns over disruptions in the route have intensified after Iran’s growing influence over maritime traffic in the region and fears that shipping restrictions or blockades could trigger sharp increases in global oil prices.
Any move to impose fees, restrictions or interruptions on vessels passing through the strait would likely affect energy-importing nations worldwide, including India, China and several European countries.
Rubio’s comments underscore Washington’s position that freedom of navigation through international waterways must be maintained.
The statement also comes as the US continues diplomatic efforts to avoid wider escalation with Iran, while warning that military options remain available if negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme fail.
The situation around the Strait of Hormuz has become a major focus for governments and energy markets because prolonged disruption could impact fuel prices, inflation and global supply chains.
