Three booked for assaulting and forcing minor to work in old-age home in Omalloor, Pathanamthitta

Kottayam: Police booked three persons in connection with the alleged assault of a minor and for forcing him to work at an old-age home in Omalloor, Pathanamthitta.The case, initially registered by Kattappana police following a complaint by a 17-year-old native of Anakkara, Idukki, was subsequently handed over to Pathanamthitta police.

During preliminary inspection, it was found that the boy was forced to work at the facility. Another 17-year-old, a native of Kottayam, was also found at the facility.According to police, the complainant, who comes from a financially disadvantaged background, was brought to the old-age home by its functionaries with the promise of education. However, the authorities allegedly refused to enrol him in school. When the boy raised the issue, he was allegedly beaten severely on a false charge of theft.A case has been registered against the facility’s manager, Reji and employees Sijo and Benny, under sections pertaining to physical abuse, wrongful confinement and child labour.Meanwhile, women and child development minister Bindu Krishna directed Pathanamthitta child welfare officer to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report. Chenneerkkara and Omalloor grama panchayat authorities also carried out inspections at the institution, as did a team led by district child protection officer.

According to Pathanamthitta child welfare committee chairperson, the boy has been shifted to a shelter home and is receiving counselling. Primary medical reports indicate that he sustained some injuries. A mother and infant, who were also found residing at the home, were likewise moved to a shelter home.
