A gang of three persons was arrested by Ambur Taluk police on Sunday for chain snatching in the surrounding areas.

The arrested persons were identified as K. Santhosh (23), D. Yeshwant (29) and R. Devathiran (28). They belong to the Anaicut area in Vellore. Initial inquiry revealed that victim V. Jayalakshmi (47), a resident of Villivakkam in Chennai, visited her relative’s house in Ambur in December 2024. Along with her relative, she was travelling to Vaniyambadi town from Ambur on Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) as a pillion in a two-wheeler. The trio, who were riding a two-wheeler, snatched her five sovereigns of gold chain and fled the spot. A case was registered by Ambur Taluk police.

Months later, a special police team was conducting a surprise check on the stretch when they stopped the trio. As the gang gave contradictory statements on their place of residence and purpose of visit, the police took them to a police station, where the trio told the police that they had been involved in chain snatching on key stretches in the area. When police inquired about Jayalakshmi’s lost gold chain, the gang told police that they did it. Police arrested them and recovered lost jewellery. They were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. Further probe is under way.
