Three-way fight awaits Sissiborgaon in poll debut

Dibrugarh: Dhemaji district’s newly carved Sissiborgaon assembly constituency will go to the polls with a seven-candidate contest. Among them, three names — BJP’s Jiban Gogoi, Raijor Dal’s Dulal Chandra Boruah and independent Nandigiri Bhuyan — are expected to dominate the race, even as four other independent contenders attempt to make their mark in the political debut of this seat.Among the contestants, 51-year-old BJP candidate Jiban Gogoi presents himself as the party’s development-driven face, banking on the ruling dispensation’s record in roads, connectivity and welfare schemes. Standing against him is 46-year-old Raijor Dal nominee Dulal Chandra Boruah, who belongs to the regional outfit that has positioned itself as an alternative to mainstream national parties. Boruah is focusing on local identity, youth employment and improved governance.The third major contender is 41-year-old Independent Nandigiri Bhuyan, who has earned a reputation as a philanthropist in the constituency. Known for extending financial and social support to poor families, Bhuyan has built a grassroots network over the years. “People here know me not as a politician but as someone who has stood by them in hard times. If I get the mandate, I will bring their voices directly to the assembly and work for flood-resilient infrastructure and better public services,” Bhuyan said.

The remaining four candidates—Pranjal Borah, Ranjit Kumar Roy, Lankeswar Das and Haren Changmai—are all independents, each trying to leverage local support.“This is a new constituency, and people are still assessing who can truly represent them. The independents are hoping that the first poll will be more about personality than party,” Bhaskar Chutia, a high school teacher from Sissiborgaon said.“Whoever represents us must fight for better embankments, tube wells, roads and electricity,” said Girish Gogoi, a young voter.
