'Ties Upgraded To Strategic Partnership': PM Modi Holds Key Talks With Cyprus President

PM Modi and President Nikos Christodoulides discussed boosting trade, tech and people-to-people links during the latter's four-day India visit.

India and Cyprus have elevated their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday, after holding talks with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in New Delhi.

Sharing details of the meeting in a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “Happy to have met President Nikos Christodoulides in Delhi. We held extensive deliberations on further strengthening the India-Cyprus friendship. Considering the close ties between our nations, we have decided to elevate our friendship into a Strategic Partnership."

Highlighting that the bilateral relationship is rooted in “shared value," the Prime Minister also expressed hope to boost trade and economic ties between the two nations in the future. “Ours is indeed a strong and futuristic partnership rooted in shared values. The growing investment linkages between our nations are a matter of immense joy and we hope to increase trade and economic ties in the times to come," PM Modi added.

Talks Focused On Trade, Technology, Infra

The high-level talks also focused on technology, infrastructure, energy and agriculture, as well as emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and fintech.

“We discussed ways to increase cooperation in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, technology and financial services. We also view defence and security as a key means of furthering bilateral friendship. Emphasis will remain on boosting cultural as well as people-to-people ties," he added.

President Christodoulides arrived in Delhi on Thursday evening after concluding the Mumbai leg of his visit. He received a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour in the national capital.

Christodoulides’s 4 Day India Visit

The visit marks the second phase of the Cypriot President’s four-day State Visit to India from May 20 to 23, at the invitation of PM Modi. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this is Christodoulides’ first official visit to India as President.

He is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, senior officials and business leaders.

The visit comes less than a year after PM Modi’s June 2025 trip to Cyprus, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over 20 years.
