The Pradyot Debbarma-led Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has scored a resounding victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, tightening its grip over tribal politics in the state and reaffirming its core demand for a ‘Greater Tipraland’. The BJP won only four seats.

The results mark a significant expansion of TMP’s footprint in the council and a sharp decline in the BJP’s representation.

According to the data shared by State Election Commission, the tribal-based party won 24 of the 28 elected seats in the council, which administers around 70 per cent of Tripura’s geographical area and is home to nearly 15 lakh people. The BJP secured the remaining four seats, while the CPI(M) and the Congress drew a blank for the second consecutive time.

Although the BJP and TMP are allies in the state government, the two parties contested the council elections separately.

The TMP’s emphatic win, its second straight victory since the party was formed in 2020 by former royal scion Pradyot Debbarma, underlined its continued dominance among Tripura’s tribal communities.

Reacting to the verdict, Debbarma said the result had increased his party’s responsibilities and appealed for peace and unity.

“Love has won over hate. I urge those who have won to work for the ‘dofa’ (community), the state and the country. Ordinary people do extraordinary work. I appeal to everyone that for our ‘dofa’ and the next generation, there should be no violence in our small state," he said in a social media post.

Tripura CM congratulates TMP

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday congratulated the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) on its landslide victory in the polls. “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the karyakartas of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the ADC elections for their courage, hard work, and dedication," Saha wrote on social media.

Polling for the TTAADC was held on April 12 and witnessed a turnout of 83.50 per cent, higher than the 81 per cent recorded in the 2021 elections. A total of 173 candidates were in the fray this time.

In the 2021 TTAADC polls, the TMP had won 18 seats with a vote share of 46.70 per cent, while the BJP had secured 9 seats with 29.30 per cent of the votes.
