Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene in an alleged case of police harassment and human rights violations involving a Kurnool resident, Balu, who reportedly attempted to end his life following continuous pressure from police officials.
In a letter addressed to the NHRC Chairperson on Wednesday (May 13), the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP alleged that Kurnool Three Town police repeatedly summoned and intimidated Balu despite there being no formally registered complaint or criminal case against him.
Mr. Gurumoorthy claimed the police acted under pressure from ruling party leaders and subjected the victim to sustained harassment without legal justification.
According to the MP, Balu was implicated in false liquor and narcotics-related cases. Unable to cope with the alleged mental harassment and fear caused by repeated police interference, he reportedly attempted to end his life by cutting his hand, Mr. Gurumoorthy alleged.
The MP described the incident as a serious violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution, including the right to equality, dignity, life and personal liberty. He also cited provisions of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, seeking an inquiry into the alleged abuse of power by public servants.
Mr. Gurumoorthy requested the NHRC to order an independent inquiry into the conduct of Kurnool police officials, seek a detailed report from district authorities, and ensure protection for the victim and his family from further harassment or retaliatory action.
