Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) Assam unit chief Abhijit Majumdar on Friday quit the party, alleging that it had increasingly become focused only on Muslim voters in both Assam and West Bengal. His exit comes amid growing turmoil within the Mamata Banerjee-led party following its crushing defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Majumdar submitted his resignation to Banerjee via email, stating that the party’s image in Assam had turned into that of an “organisation working solely for Muslims". He also claimed that a similar political approach was visible in West Bengal.

Majumdar Claims Party Works Only For Muslims

“TMC has become the Trinamool Muslim Congress party; my Hindu ideology does not align with it," Abhijeet Majumdar said while speaking to PTI, after resigning from the party.

Saying he could no longer continue in the party under such conditions, Majumdar argued that the TMC’s current functioning and political direction were no longer acceptable to him.

Mass Exodus Hits TMC

His exit is the latest in a series of resignations that have rocked the party since the Assembly poll results.

Earlier, senior TMC leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen stepped down as the party’s national spokesperson. In his resignation letter, Sen cited corruption allegations and the handling of the RG Kar rape-murder case as reasons behind his decision.

“Even though I did not agree with views during various difficult times, I fought publicly for the party in the media on many controversial issues. But in the current situation, when the people of Bengal have rejected us for various immoral acts and corruption, my mind no longer agrees to support them as a spokesperson," Sen wrote in the letter.

TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar also resigned from multiple organisational posts, alleging that the party failed to protect her from alleged misconduct and verbal abuse by a fellow MP, an apparent reference to senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee.

The BJP swept the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections by winning 207 of the 293 declared seats, ending the TMC’s long rule in the state.
