India’s passenger vehicle market ended March 2026 on a steady note, with automakers reporting consistent dispatches across segments despite increased competition and shifting buyer preferences.

The top 10 models recorded a combined 1,76,586 units, up 11.72 per cent year-on-year from 1,58,063 units in March 2025. The growth reflects steady demand across hatchbacks, compact sedans and SUVs despite rising competition and changing buyer preferences. Sales were spread across entry-level hatchbacks, compact sedans and SUVs, indicating balanced demand rather than reliance on a single segment. In this article, let’s take a look at the top 10 highest-selling cars and SUVs in March 2026.Maruti Suzuki Dzire Maruti Suzuki’s Dzire secured the first position in March 2026, with total dispatches reaching 21,224 units. The compact sedan is powered by the brand’s new Z-series 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 82hp and 112Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox. The Dzire is available in four trims - LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+. While the manual transmission is offered across the range, the AMT and CNG options are available only on the VXi and ZXi variants.

Tata Punch/EVIn second place were the Tata Punch facelift and the Punch EV, which together recorded 20,977 units for the month. The updated Punch, priced from Rs 5.59 lakh (ex-showroom), features design revisions, interior updates, additional equipment, and a new engine option. The SUV is offered with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering 88PS and 115Nm, as well as a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit producing 120PS and 170Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Punch EV is available in Standard and Long Range versions. The former uses a 25kWh battery with a claimed MIDC range of 315km, while the latter gets a 35kWh battery rated for 421km. Tata Motors recently also launched the Punch EV with bigger battery packs; deliveries are expected to begin soon.

Tata Nexon/EVNext on the list is the Tata Nexon/EV. In March 2026, the Tata Nexon range, including the Nexon EV, with the combined sub-compact SUV lineup registering 19,810 units.

The strong performance reflects sustained demand for both the internal combustion and electric versions. The Nexon ICE is available with two engine options. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 120hp and 170Nm of torque, while the CNG version delivers 100hp.

Buyers can also opt for a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine that generates 113hp and 260Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a manual gearbox and an AMT.The Nexon EV is offered with 30kWh and 45kWh battery packs. Both versions are powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing 145hp and 215Nm. The smaller battery pack offers an ARAI-certified range of 325km, while the 45kWh version delivers a claimed range of 489km on a full charge.Hyundai Creta/EVHyundai’s Creta lineup, including the Creta Electric, ranked fourth with combined sales of 17,838 units in March 2026.

The Creta is offered with three engine options: a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol producing 160hp and 260Nm, a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol generating 115PS and 144Nm, and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel delivering 116PS and 250Nm. The Creta Electric comes with two battery options - a 42kWh pack with a claimed ARAI range of 390km, and a 51.4kWh pack offering up to 473km on a single charge.Maruti Suzuki Ertiga In fifth position was the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which posted 17,072 units during the month.

The MPV uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine generating 103hp and 137Nm of torque, offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Key features include a 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an Arkamys sound system, automatic climate control and a three-row, seven-seat configuration.

Safety equipment comprises six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and seatbelt reminders for all occupants.Maruti Suzuki Wagon RNext is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R with 17,025 unit sales in March 2026. The WagonR gets two engine options - a 1.0-litre NA petrol or a 1.2-litre NA petrol. Gearbox options include a 5-speed manual or AMT. Features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, electric ORVMs, alloy wheels, rear wipers, steering-mounted controls, six airbags, ABS, ESC, hill hold assist and much more.Maruti Suzuki BalenoIn seventh place was the Baleno, which recorded 16,392 units during the month. The premium hatchback is equipped with a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine generating 90PS and 113Nm of torque. It is offered with a choice of a 5-speed manual gearbox or an AMT. Maruti Suzuki BrezzaThe Maruti Suzuki Brezza took eighth place with 16,130 units sold in March 2026. The subcompact SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology, producing 103PS and 137Nm.

Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. A CNG version paired with a 5-speed manual is also available.Maruti Suzuki Fronx Next is the Maruti Suzuki Fronx with 15,540 unit sales in March 2026. The Fronx gets two engine options - a 1.0-litre turbo petrol or a 1.2-litre NA petrol. The Fronx features a burgundy-and-black theme with a free-standing 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Other features include automatic LED headlamps with DRLs, wireless charging, automatic climate control, connected car tech, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Arkamys-tuned sound system, cruise control, height-adjustable driver’s seat, rear AC vents, auto-dimming IRVM, HUD display, 360-degree camera, up to 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, and ESP with hill-hold assist.Mahindra Scorpio-N and Scorpio ClassicThe Mahindra Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic followed with combined sales of 14,578 units in March 2026. The Scorpio-N is available with two engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol engine delivering 203hp and 370Nm with the manual and 380Nm with the automatic, and a 2.2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel producing 175hp and 400Nm. The Scorpio Classic continues with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine paired exclusively with a manual transmission.
