It’s no exaggeration to say that Italy’s latest defeat has sent shockwaves across the football world.

Three attempts. Three failures. And now, an unthinkable reality: the Azzurri will miss a third consecutive FIFA World Cup.

For a nation that boasts four world titles, this is unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory.

Sinner Speaks for a Nation

Among those left reeling was tennis star Jannik Sinner, who didn’t hold back when reflecting on the disappointment.

“Look, it is what it is. It’s tough," Sinner said.

And then came the bombshell admission.

🎙️: “Would you exchange a title for Italy to qualify for the WC?"🦊: “It’s crazy because I did the whole interview and now French come and they ask me this. No, joking." 😂“I would love to make this exchange. Many young people and kids haven’t seen the WC with Italy."

“If you ask me, I’d like to make this exchange (one of his titles for Italy to be in the FIFA World Cup) because it’s a simple thing. Many young people and kids haven’t seen the World Cup yet, especially with Italy not being there," the Italian ace added.

“For me, it’s the same—I was too young back then to really follow it closely."

Shootout Heartbreak in Zenica

Italy’s fate was sealed in Zenica, where they fell to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout on Tuesday. The cracks showed when Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante failed to convert from the spot.

Bosnia, by contrast, were flawless, scoring all four of their penalties to clinch a famous victory.

The result means Italy haven’t even won a knockout match at the World Cup since lifting the trophy in 2006.

Hope, But No Quick Fix

Despite the heartbreak, Sinner struck a cautiously optimistic tone about the future.

“Now we have some time to change a few things and hopefully get back to where we deserve to be, and where we want to be. So, let’s see. But yeah, at this point, we can’t change anything anymore," Sinner stated.

For the Azzurri, the question now isn’t just about bouncing back but rather about rediscovering their identity.
