The Joint Committee of Trade Unions and the State-led United Struggle, Karnataka, have called for a nationwide strike on February 12 to demand the repeal of the four labour codes and withdrawal of several proposed and existing policies affecting workers and farmers.
Addressing press persons in Hubballi on February 9, Mahesh Pattar, state secretary, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said the strike is being organised jointly by workers and farmers’ organisations. He alleged that the four labour codes will weaken labour protections, restrict the right to strike, dilute social security measures, and favour corporate interests. He also opposed the proposed VB-G RAM G scheme, claiming it will undermine rural employment.
Mr. Pattar criticised both the Union and State government, alleging that the labour codes are being implemented to benefit capitalists. He urged the State government to withdraw the notifications issued to implement the codes and take a stand similar to that of the Kerala government.
He said workers in Dharwad district are conducting awareness campaigns and will stay away from work on the day of the strike.
In Hubballi, a protest march will be taken out from Sangolli Rayanna Circle to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Circle at 11 a.m., followed by a protest meeting. In Dharwad, a similar procession will be held from Kala Bhavan to Vivekananda Circle and back to Kala Bhavan at the same time.
The demand list includes restoration of the MGNREGA scheme, withdrawal of the Electricity Bill and Seed Bill, repeal of amendments affecting land, agriculture, and labour, implementation of revised minimum wages, social security for unorganised workers, regularisation of contract employees, and measures to control price rise and ensure minimum support prices for agricultural produce and others.
Ashok Barki, district president of Trade Union Coordination Centre, Bhuvana Bellary, district president of All India United Trade Union Centre, Baseer Mudol, district chief of All India Trade Union Congress, and Chidanand Savadatti of Auto Chalakara Sanga were present.
