In a heartbreaking incident in Goilkera, tragedy befell the community as Rani Boipai, a vibrant 30-year-old, lost her life to a rogue elephant in West Singhbhum. The majestic creature, part of a restless herd wreaking havoc nearby, charged as she stepped outside her home.
Jamshedpur: A 30-year-old woman was trampled to death by an elephant in Goilkera police station limits of West Singhbhum district on Friday. The deceased was identified Rani Boipai of Seerjankocha village.Police said the residents of Seerjankocha raised an alarm after an elephant strayed into the village in the early hours. Hearing the noise, Rani Boipai came out of her house and began running towards a location she thought would be safe. However, she came in front on the elephant. The elephant tossed her into the air and then trampled her to death when she hit the ground.The locals reached the scene after hearing her screams and chased the elephant to a nearby forest.
Efforts to take her to a hospital proved futile as she had died by then. The police and forest officials reached the village in the morning and initiated a legal process to provide ex gratia to the bereaved family.“We handed Rs 20,000 to the family of the deceased woman. The remaining ex gratia amount will be given upon completion of the due process. A team has been deployed in Kuida panchayat to prevent elephants from venturing into the villages. Locals have been asked to remain alert,” said Kolhan range officer Ram Nandan Ram.The villagers told forest officials that an elephant herd was wandering in the panchayat area and caused damage to thatched houses and destroyed paddy fields in the last 4 days.
