Transco to invest Rs 7,668 crore to strengthen transmission network

Bhopal: Power consumers in Madhya Pradesh can expect fewer transmission bottlenecks, better voltage stability and more reliable supply over the next five years, as MP Transco plans to invest Rs 7,668 crore to strengthen the state’s transmission network.Under its 14th Transmission Expansion Plan for 2024-25 to 2028-29, the utility will build 4,867 circuit km of extra-high-voltage lines and add 9,608 MVA of transformation capacity. The expansion is aimed at meeting rising power demand, integrating renewable energy projects, and improving grid connectivity across the state.Officials said the new infrastructure will enable more efficient transmission from generating stations to distribution networks, reduce system congestion, and improve overall grid performance.

It is also expected to support the growing share of solar and other renewable sources in Madhya Pradesh’s power mix.MP Transco has arranged funding through loans from REC, PFC, commercial banks and other financial institutions, with support from the state government. It has also sought regulatory approval from the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission for additional transmission projects worth Rs 4,387 crore.

To ensure timely execution, the utility is focusing on faster approvals, streamlined tendering, resource mobilisation, land acquisition and right-of-way resolution. Officials noted that several externally funded projects, including those supported by JICA, ADB and the Green Energy Corridor programme, have been completed on schedule in recent years. The company is also generating non-tariff revenue through its 15,000-km Optical Ground Wire network, of which 9,250 fibre-pair km have been leased to private players. Officials said this income could strengthen finances and support future investments.
