India’s challenge at the Badminton Asia Championships has suffered another setback.
Days after the withdrawal of star men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty — due to Satwik’s injury — it has now emerged that women’s doubles duo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela have also pulled out.
The reason behind their withdrawal remains unclear, though multiple reports have confirmed the development, further weakening India’s prospects in doubles events.
Sen, Sindhu to Lead the Charge
With key absences piling up, the spotlight now shifts to singles stars Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu, who will spearhead India’s bid to end a long wait for a continental singles title.
Sen enters the tournament in strong form, while Sindhu brings experience and pedigree to the big stage.
Busy Singles Draw
India’s men’s singles lineup also includes HS Prannoy, returning from a shoulder injury to face a qualifier, and Kidambi Srikanth, who takes on Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew.
US Open champion Ayush Shetty faces a tough opener against China’s Li Shi Feng.
In women’s singles, apart from Sindhu, Unnati Hooda meets Thailand’s Supanida Katethong, while Tanvi Sharma and Malvika Bansod face challenging opponents from Malaysia and Thailand respectively.
Doubles Challenges Mount
India’s doubles contingent faces tough draws. In men’s doubles, Hariharan Amsakarunan and M R Arjun take on the top seeds from South Korea.
Meanwhile, India’s mixed doubles pairs, including Rohan Kapoor and Dhruv Kapila, will face strong Malaysian and Thai opposition.
