Tripura welcomes railways’ passenger safety steps, higher fines

Agartala: The Tripura govt has welcomed the Indian Railways’ recent decision to enhance passenger safety and enforce fines for various offences on trains and railway premises under the Jan Vishwas Act.State transport minister Sushanta Chowdhury said these steps are designed to boost passenger safety, improve comfort and uphold order across the railway system.

The revised regulations now impose a fine of Rs 2,000 for begging in railway coaches, on platforms and within station grounds.Repeat offenders could face imprisonment under existing legal provisions. Chowdhury said this initiative is part of a larger plan by Indian Railways to foster a cleaner, safer and more welcoming travel atmosphere for passengers.According to the latest memorandum from the railway ministry, penalties for travelling without a valid ticket have been significantly increased.

Selling goods without necessary authorisation on trains or at railway properties will also attract a Rs 2,000 fine. Additionally, passengers found smoking in restricted areas such as coaches or compartments will face a Rs 2,000 fine. Moreover, passengers using abusive language, causing disturbances or travelling intoxicated may face fines up to Rs 1,000 and could be removed from the train. Men occupying compartments or berths designated for women will face a fine of Rs 2,500 and will be removed immediately.

“The revised penalties will serve as a deterrent, greatly improving passenger comfort, especially on long-distance trips where issues such as unauthorised vendors, smoking and disruptive behaviour are frequently reported,” Chowdhury said.
